Avalon Beach and the Northern Beaches in general are a fabulous holiday destination. If you call The Peninsula home, you can take advantage of living in such an amazing location by having a staycation this summer rather than going on holiday somewhere else. Don’t just sit around the house though; get out with your friends and enjoy all the amazing activities your neighbourhood has to offer.

Here are some summer staycation ideas for Avalon and beyond:

Learn some new skills

The beaches are the most defining feature of this area, so be sure to get in some quality time by the shore. There are many places to rent a surfboard for the day, and many of them offer lessons as well. With a bit of practice, you’ll be hanging ten in no time!

Stand-up paddle boarding has surged in popularity in recent years. It isn’t nearly as difficult as you might think. Take a quick lesson or just get out there and give it a try. Not only is it heaps of fun, but it is a great full-body workout. If you’re feeling nervous, head out in the early morning, before the wind picks up.

Up the road in Ingleside, you can try your hand at horseback riding. Even if you’ve never done it before or haven’t since you were a child, it’s quite easy to get the hang of. While you ride, you’ll have the opportunity to take in the beautiful countryside.

Relax and enjoy some personal time

When you’re on summer holiday, even if you’re staying close to home, you deserve some pampering. Avalon and Palm Beach have plenty of places where you can have a massage or Reiki treatment. Chakana Avalon offers some great spa treatments to help you relax and unwind during your summer staycation.

If you prefer a bit more activity, try a yoga class. You’ll get a great workout while quieting your mind and reducing stress. Health Space Yoga and Gwynne Jones Yoga both offer a variety of classes suitable for all skill levels, so don’t worry if it’s your first time on the mat.

Take a day trip

Venture beyond home without tackling The Bends by hopping on the ferry to head over to Ettalong for a picnic lunch. The beaches here tend to be less busy than in Avalon, so you’ll have no trouble finding a spot on the sand and the kids will love it. Not keen on a picnic? Book into one of the beachfront eateries.

Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park is another great excursion for the whole family, in particular if you have older children. Pitch a tent for the night and enjoy a swim at The Basin campground. In the morning, hike up to see the centuries old Aboriginal carvings before taking the ferry back to Palm Beach.

Love where you live

So often, locals forget to take the time to truly enjoy where they live. This is a tragedy – especially on the Peninsula! Instead of getting stuck in endless traffic, spend your summer relaxing at the beach or supporting the local shops. Be sure to try a meal or a coffee from a cafe or restaurant you haven’t visited before as well.

As a long term resident, there’s not much I don’t know about Avalon!
